Getting lost in a book or bookstore is one of my favorite activities, so when I get a book recommendation based on other books I’ve read, I’m excited.
Reading Ann Patchett’s State of Wonder, transported me back to the world of Barbara Kingsolver’s Poisonwood Bible that was at once disturbing and challenging. To travel with the main character who was a lab scientist to the Amazon made me nervous for her and also caused me to wonder if there was more travel in my near future.
But the most enlightening part of reading this book is that there was a moment towards the end of the book where Ann threw in one last twist that was so unexpected and unseen that I was thrown as a reader and as a person. We don’t ever know, as readers or as people, what lies around the corner. All we can do is keeping walking and reading as we go.
